Hello friends,
Just heading out the door for Mama B’s birthday party at thenursing home.
81 years old. Did I just say 81?
Well, we’ll get the party started with some Indian food, andKarin ordered some sort of fabulous cake involving multiple layers of chocolateecstasy. We’ll pass it out to whoever happens to roll by. Who knows what theday will hold.
I’ll be brief – hard for me:
We have two concerts coming up this weekend inDayton, Ohio, at a funky old listening room we’ve been playing in forever calledCanal Street Tavern. Hope you can join us this Saturday and/or Sunday, Feb 16& 17! Monday is a holiday, so we won’t feel too bad about letting the nightunfold as we try out many of our new songs and pull a few familiar favoritesout of the hat. Singer songwriter (and actor!) Kim Taylor, will kick thingsoff. (Kim contributed the song Days Like This to The Long Surrender, and we’rebig fans of her work. And she’ll have pre-release copies of her brand newrecord, Love Is A Dog with her. It’s a wonderful project.)
March is all about recording for us. Thanks somuch to all of you who have pitched in advance to help make these records! Andnote, if you’re attending the concert here at the farm on Memorial Day Wknd, look for a letter in your in box early next week with more details!
In April, we’re going to take a little horseshoeswing through the Southeast and back up the coast a ways for a change ofscenery and a little springtime adventure. Chk out overtherhine.com for ticketlinks and more info. We have concerts in:
4/5 Franklin, TN
4/6 Birmingham, AL
4/8 Athens, GA
4/9 Asheville, NC
4/10 Raleigh, NC
4/12 Charlottesville, VA
4/13 Annapolis, MD
4/14 Ephrata, PA
We’ll be joined on the above(except for Asheville) by Ben Sollee! Hope to see you. Again, overtherhine.comfor more.
Finally, What a gift to wake up to this letter this morning: beautiful, honest, affirming, painful, hopeful - embodying so much of what we hope our songs liveup to. Had to (with the writer's permission) share. Hope to see many of youthis wknd in Dayton. Peace, LJD

Linford and Karin:
Hi. We haven’t met, though you’ve graciously allowed me to follow youon Facebook for a few years. I’ve been an OTR fan for about 10 years now, introducedto you via “Go Down Easy” which was featured on the Love & Sex soundtrack.
Since then, I’ve seen you every time you’ve come to Dayton from 2006on; sometimes attending alone, sometimes with a friend or date. Every time it’sbeen a transformative experience. While I loved seeing the band in the statelyand beautiful Victoria, for me, Canal St with its inconveniently placed wooden pillars,ass-blistering church seats and low, comfy ceiling is the best place to seeyou: somewhere close, intimate, and made for the truths you and Karin bravelyshare from the stage.
I’m sure you get a ton of these sorts of requests, so please forgiveme sending one more. I’ll be attending the Saturday, Feb 16 Canal St Tavernshow and wondered if you’d consider putting “Go Down Easy” on the playlist. Itholds
special meaning to me, for a number of reasons. When I first heard it,my marriage was disintegrating slowly, and the music and singing woke somethingin me, something I didn’t even know was there (or thought had died years ago).It gave me hope that, sometime in the future, I’d be able to give and receivelove again, that there’d be someone I was passionate about and was passionatefor me
in return.
Since first hearing it, I’ve gone through a crapload of changes. Mymarriage ended. I’ve experienced some life-altering heartbreak, two joblayoffs, watched my daughters turn into capable, amazing young women…and thatsong has remained a constant in my life, a ghostly yet substantial articulationof yearning, love, hope and pain.
I’ll be attending the Feb 16th show with a woman I met last year, onethat I fell nearly instantly for but have spent 12 months getting to know, figuring out
how to be the best man for her and myself, and working through thebaggage two 40-something folks bring to romance. If you would play “Go DownEasy,” we’d be
so grateful and it would be a memory and experience I’m certain we’dreturn to many times in the years to come. This is _not_ a request for ashout-out from
y’all on stage – just that you might consider throwing the song intothe set list. I’ve never seen you perform it live, and keep hoping to see youdo so at one of the shows I attend.
Regardless of the songs played Saturday night, you and Karin have mythanks and support for the life of music, artistry and seeking you share withthe world. We’re better off for the hard work you do and the love and pain andquestions you give us through music.
Respectfully yours,
